SHIP BREAKING YARDS

Chittagong, Bangladesh

"The last journey"

Ship-recycling industries have been located along the coastal belt of Bangladesh and Chittagong is the second biggest ship-breaking yard in the world. Approx. 250 ships are dismantled each year. Almost 100% materials and equipment collected from a scrap ship is recycled and 45,000 tons of processed wood & furniture annually and henceforth preventing de-forestation, providing an huge contribution to the National Economics supporting inland shipbuilding industry.

On the other hand even if The Government of Bangladesh has recently introduced new national policies and roles to improve the environmental, health and safety standards, still workers are facing the long-term health effects of exposure to hazardous substances released when the ships are broken down and on average, one worker dies in the yards a week and every day a worker is injured.
