The Gulf’s construction boom has been fueled by a massive influx of workers, primarily from Asia.

Dangling on ropes 150 meters in the air in the desert heat the window cleaners earn between US$300 and US$400 a month, depending on experience. Many of them spend their days abseiling down towers suspended only by ropes and clutching a squeegee and a bucket of soapy water.

The career is usually a short one, with most high-altitude cleaners retiring from the job by the time they are 30.
